GOSHEN – The Orange County Legislature approved spending over $374,000 to cover the cost of holding early voting in the November election.

The state approved plan comes with a price tag, only a portion of which will Albany fund and that didn’t sit well with county lawmakers who reluctantly gave their nod Thursday night to bond for the funding.

Republican Thomas Faggione was one of only two legislators to vote against the spending compelled by the state.

“Yes, they passed what has been called ‘sweeping changes’ to the elections process, but what they swept under the rug is the fact that they didn’t intend to fully fund these changes forcing counties such as ourselves, and counties across the state, to pick up a portion of the bill,” he said.

In Orange County’s case, the total cost of setting up and operating early voting is over $668,000, but the state has only committed $294,000, leaving the county to pick up the rest of the tab.
