MONROE – Classes were scheduled to begin today, Wednesday, but they were pushed back by one day when the Monroe-Woodbury Central School District was hit by a cyber security attack.

The district’s computer system is shut down to allow the district’s technical team and cyber security consultants to restore the district servers, said Superintendent Dr. Elsie Rodriguez. How long it will take to restore the process is unknown at this time and the full impact to the district’s systems will not be known until restoration is complete, she said.

Once the problem was discovered on Tuesday, Rodriguez said they following proper notifications.

“The next step is we are required, because there is standard protocol, to reach out to the FBI, Homeland Security, to the chief operating officer in New York State, to our district superintendent and we are also required to call our insurance carrier,” she said.

The insurance company has sent forensic teams to investigate the situation both on- and off-site.

“As part of the district’s regular security protocols, all data is backed up on site and off site on a daily basis,” Rodriguez said.

She said classes will be “business as usual” when they begin on Thursday.

They are not worried about a physical threat to the district, Rodriguez said.
