West Point Prep School candidate killed in Greene County incident

TOWN OF HUNTER – A cadet candidate at the US Military Academy Preparatory School at West Point was killed in a mountain climbing accident in the Town of Hunter.

State Police said at around 11 a.m. on Saturday, the male victim had been hanging onto a rock ledge at Fawn’s Leap, off Route 23A, when a portion of the rock broke from the ledge, causing him to fall. The area is routinely frequented by cliff divers.

Lifesaving measures at the scene were unsuccessful, State Police said.

The victim’s name is being withheld for 24 hours as per Defense Department policy.
