KIRYAS JOEL – Tens of thousands of men converged on the Hasidic Village of Kiryas Joel Tuesday evening to pay tribute to the founder of the village and the Satmar sect of Judaism. The Grand Rebbe Joel Teitelbaum died 40 years ago at age 92 on August 19, 1979.

He is buried in the Kiryas Joel Cemetery where the thousands of mourners, led by his great nephew, the current Grand Rebbe of Kiryas Joel, Aaron Teitelbaum, paid their respects.

Rebbe Joel Teitelbaum was born on January 13, 1887 in what was then Austria-Hungary and today is Romania.

As is customary, thousands of men flock to his tomb where they recite prayers.

Kiryas Joel is now part of the Town of Palm Tree, which in Yiddish means “Teitelbaum.”
