Area unemployment remains low

ALBANY – July unemployment in the Hudson Valley/Catskills continued its downward trend, albeit slightly, the state labor department reported on Tuesday.

The total rate of joblessness in the Hudson Valley during the 12 months ending in July was 3.8 percent.

Columbia County, with a 2.9 percent rate (down from 3.0 percent in July 2018), is the lowest in the state. Hamilton County, with 3.0 percent, comes in right behind.

In Hudson Valley/Catskills, Sullivan County came in second, with 3.3 percent unemployment (down from 3.6 percent one year earlier).

Dutchess County had 3.6 percent joblessness (down from 3.7 percent). The counties of Putnam (flat from last year), Rockland (down from 3.8 percent) and Ulster (down from 3.8 percent) each had 3.7 percent rates of unemployment.

Westchester County had 3.9 percent joblessness, compared with 4.0 one year earlier.

Orange County remained flat at 3.9 percent. Greene County remained flat at 4.1 percent.

The Hudson Valley’s 3.8 percent was the lowest July unemployment are since 2001.
