MAMAKATING – The man believed to have shot and killed a woman in the Summitville area of the Town of Mamakating Monday morning fled the scene and later committed suicide.

State Police BCI Captain Michael Drake said the victim, Ashley Greene, 33, of 286 Mount Vernon Road in Summitville, knew the suspect, Richard Boniface, 70, of Bloomingburg because she did some house work for him.

He went over to the residence she shared with her mother just before 9 a.m. They talked and a short time later, he shot her several times, killing her, Drake said.

Boniface fled the scene in his pickup truck and a few hours later, he was tracked to a wooded area where he was found, up against a tree, where he took his own life, the captain said. A 9 mm gun was recovered near his body, but Drake said it was unclear if it was the same weapon that killed Greene.

A motive for the murder-suicide remains under investigation.

Drake said Greene had a significant other, but it could not be determined if jealousy was a motive for her killing. He did say Boniface had loaned Greene money.

Greene’s mother was at home at the time of the shooting, but thought nothing of Boniface coming over. It was only after she heard gunshots that she called 911.
