POUGHKEEPSIE – Police in the City of Poughkeepsie have identified an intruder who attempted to rob a man in his apartment late Saturday night as Shamaal Irving, 23, of the City of Poughkeepsie.

Police said the victim told them that two men entered his apartment at 107 Bridge Street at 10 p.m. Both were armed with guns.

The resident told police he began fighting with the men and was able to get the gun away from one and shoot him. Irving, who was shot in the neck and head, was pronounced dead at the scene. The other intruder is believed to have been shot as well and he fled the apartment, possible in an unknown vehicle.

His identity has not yet been determined, but he is described as a black man, less than six feet tall with a stocky build.

District Attorney William Grady said while the case continues to be investigated by police, his office is reviewing it.

“It won’t be until the investigation is complete,” Grady said. “We will be in a better position to know what, if any charges could be preferred. In the meantime, because a death occurred during the course of this invasion and robbery, the matter will certainly be presented to the grand jury so that it can review all of the facts and circumstances.”

Police believe the incident was not random as it is believed the intended victim was targeted because he was known to sell marijuana.
