Greenwood Lake Police Chief John Hansen briefs the media about the incident

GREENWOOD LAKE – The body of the man who jumped into Greenwood Lake to help two children, who were swimming, back into their pontoon boat, was recovered Monday.

Greenwood Lake Police Chief John Hansen said David Traub, 38, of Chestnut Ridge, a father of seven, jumped into the lake to assist the children back into the boat. The children wore life preservers.

Hansen said Traub went under and did not surface and a search late Sunday afternoon was called off because of heavy thunderstorms.

The search was resumed Monday and Traub’s body was recovered from the lake.

Police divers recovered his body from the lake before 11 a.m.

Greenwood Lake Police and Fire personnel and Hatzolah EMS assisted at the scene.
