Demolition underway at the former psych center

TOWN OF POUGHKEEPSIE – Developers have begun clearing the site of the former Hudson River Psychiatric Center in the Town of Poughkeepsie to make way for a $300 million mixed use community dubbed Hudson Heritage.

The hospital operated from 1873 until it closed in the early 2000s.

EFG/Saber Heritage SC LLC, a partnership of Saber Real Estate North and EnviroFinance Group, received approvals to begin demolishing the former campus.

Spokesman Martin Berger said the redevelopment will be “a thriving, open-air community in which residents are within walking distance of top-notch restaurants, shopping, health care, education, entertainment, and beautiful nature trails.”

Hudson Heritage will include 750 units of townhomes, rental apartments and assisted-living housing.

There will also be a 150-room hotel; 350,000 square feet of commercial and retail space, 40,000 square feet of medical facility/office space; and a 24,700 square foot education/performing arts center.
