MAHOPAC – A Mahopac man was found dead in a septic tank at his home on Bullet Hole Road in hamlet.

Carmel Police identified the victim as Paul Ascani, 62, the proprietor of a contracting company in Mahopac.

Police Chief Michael Cazzari said his department received a call at 9:30 Monday morning requesting assistance for a possible cardiac arrest. Carmel officers and Putnam County sheriff’s deputies investigated and discovered Ascani’s body partially underground with his legs showing from a hole in the ground.

Ascani was pronounced dead at the scene.

The chief said Ascani’s house was for sale and a potential buyer who was walking the property while waiting for a realtor made the grisly discovery.

According to Cazzari, Ascani was attempting to sell the residence and had been advised of a problem with a vent in his septic tank. “Our investigation has determined Mr. Ascani was attempting to make the repair when he passed away.”

Fire and EMS personnel from the Mahopac and Mahopac Falls Fire Departments responded to assist along with a paramedic from the EM STAR Ambulance Company.

The cause of the death is not considered to be suspicious and remains under investigation pending the results of toxicological testing.
