MONTICELLO – Sullivan County and Monticello Village officials are looking to have Monticello’s Broadway corridor designated a National Historic District.

Inclusion in a federally-designated historic district will make improvements to properties eligible for grant opportunities and tax incentives.

County Legislator Alan Sorensen, chairman of the Planning Committee, said the designation would do much for Monticello’s downtown.

“In my mind it’s kind of a natural fit for the village. There are some really beautiful historic buildings on Broadway and I think it’s a nomination that is very worthy of a national nomination for the National Register and I am really excited that the village is pursuing that designation,” he said.

County Legislator Ira Steingart said including Monticello in the National Register “will help preserve the remarkable history of our county seat and enable us to obtain grants to enhance the downtown area.”
