Tethering for longer than two hours now prohibited

POUGHKEEPSIE – The Dutchess County Legislature is poised to create an animal abuse registry and a law regulating the tethering of animals when it meets on Monday evening.

Both measures made it through the Government Services Committee on Thursday night.

While a couple of other counties in the region also have an animal abuse registry, committee Chairman Will Truit noted there is no communication between them and that could cause a problem.

“In the next legislative session we are going to be pushing for this in Albany that they pass a statewide animal abuse registry so that it’s all inclusive and that we can communicate with other counties and we know that people from outside of the county, if they are abusive to animals or not, so that way we would know to not allow certain people to purchase animals,” Truitt said.

The tethering law in Dutchess County will regulate when and how long a dog could be tied up outside in inclement weather.
