Three occupants of flame-engulfed car in critical condition

BLOOMING GROVE – The three people who were in a car that rolled over and burst into flames late Sunday night are in critical condition after being ejected, State Police said Monday.

The vehicle, a 2003 Chevrolet Trail Blazer, was traveling west on Route 17 in Blooming Grove when it left the road, struck a guard rail and came to rest on the passenger side across the westbound lanes and burst into flames.

All three occupants were transported to Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla. They are identified as the driver Wesley Smith, 19, of New Windsor, and his passengers, Amber Santiago, 19, of Newburgh and Nageria Smith, 23, of Queens.

The investigation is continuing. Police ask anyone who may have witnessed the accident to call State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation at Monroe at 845-782-8311.

State Police were assisted at the scene by Kiryas Joel EMS, Blooming Grove Fire Department, South Blooming Grove Fire Department and Monroe Joint Fire District.
