POUGHKEEPSIE – Scores of residents from throughout the Hudson Valley were on hand Sunday for the 11th annual La Guelaguetza, a Mexican cultural celebration featuring song and dance, handmade crafts and delightful and scrumptious Mexican food. A wide variety of artisans also displayed their original creations throughout the day-long event.

The Poughkeepsie waterfront at Waryas Park hosted the event which was also celebrated in the city of Oaxaca, the capital of the Mexican state of Oaxaca.

Organizers explained the celebration was highlighted by folkloric groups from the eight regions of the state whose members participated by wearing colorful costumes.

Presenters said the word Guelaguetza originated from “the Zapotec language and is interpreted as the reciprocal exchange of gifts and services.”
