HAWTHORNE – A hand grenade found on Westchester County property in Tuckahoe Monday morning contained no gunpowder and did not pose any safety threat to the public.

The Westchester County Police Hazardous Devices Unit removed the grenade from property near Tuckahoe Road and Garrett Avenue that is part of the Bronx River Parkway Reservation. The item was a rusted, inert training hand grenade that contained no explosive material.

A search of immediate area did not reveal any other similar items.

The incident began about 9:30 a.m. when county maintenance workers discovered the device while mowing the property. Westchester County and Tuckahoe Police patrol officers secured the area while HDU, known informally as the Bomb Squad, responded.

The device was examined, found to be non-hazardous, and removed. The scene was cleared about 10:30 a.m.
