Skye expected to fully recover, after costly leg surgery

HUDSON – Skye, the horse rescued from an abandoned barn with no food or water for an extended time, is expected to make a full recovery; however the Columbia-Greene Humane Society said surgery and post-surgery follow-up costs are estimated at $3,000 to $4,000.

“It’s amazing that Skye survived this hot weather period, considering the average horse will drink 10 to 20 gallons of water each day,” said SPCA president/cruelty investigator Ron Perez.. “Her survival demonstrates what a fighter she is. She has an incredible will to live.”

She was seized last week in an emaciated and dehydrated condition and had two serious injuries on her rear legs. One wound was so severe that it had grown to the size of a basketball.

William Hrazanek, 73, of Fleischmanns was arrested by the Greene County Sheriff’s Office and charged with animal cruelty. He could face up to a year in jail and/or a $1,000 fine.

To give toward Skye’s needs, donations can be mailed to CGHS/SPCA, 111 Humane Society Road, Hudson, NY 12534, Att: Skye, or send a donation via the shelter’s website at www.cghs.org .
