GOSHEN – Assemblyman Colin Schmitt (R, New Windsor) went on an inspection tour of Orange County Jail and it’s ICE detention facility recently. The jail, in the Town of Goshen, houses approximately 600 inmates, with a quarter of those being federal ICE detainees.

Sheriff Carl DuBois’ operation has been assessed, audited and evaluated by many different agencies and received accreditations from five different agencies for compliance and successfully meeting high standards maintaining safety, security, justice, inmate care, programs, and administration in Orange County Jail.

Orange County Jail is physically located in my Assembly district and recently has been the subject of increased public attention and political posturing” said Schmitt. “I have toured the entire facility, including an in-depth in-person review of the ICE dentition area. I applaud Sheriff Carl DuBois for maintaining a safe, secure, clean and humane correctional environment. “

Schmitt said the ICE detention areas are “immaculately kept with the latest technology including large flat screen TVs, computers with internet and color printing capabilities, exercise equipment and personal food options all available for the detainees. I was amazed to personally witness on the tour that the sleeping and hygiene areas for ICE detainees is more modern and well maintained than most of the military barracks I use while on duty. The technology available to the detainees is also above what you see in most personal homes, businesses or public schools.”

Schmitt said, “The picture being painted to the public regarding the jail as a whole and the ICE detention areas is completely inaccurate.”
