NAPANOCH – A state prisoner, who was being processed after being received at Ulster Correctional Facility in Napanoch as a parole violator, attacked a corrections officer, biting his right hand and refusing to let go.

The July 12 incident was conveyed in an assault report issued on Thursday.

The officer struck the inmate, Eugene Blake, 29, with his other hand and ordered him to release his grip. While the officer continued to strike Blake in an attempt to break his teeth grip they both fell to the floor.

A responding sergeant hit the inmate with pepper spray resulting in him releasing his grip. But, as responding officers tried to restrain him, an officer was struck in the face and kicked to the knee by Blake, who was eventually placed in mechanical restrains.

When he was being interviewed by the sergeant in the special housing unit, Blake stood up, lunged at the officer and spit in his face. He was pepper sprayed again, but continued to advance toward the sergeant. Two other officers were able to subdue him.

The entire incident was not over yet. After Blake was examined by medical staff, he laid down on the floor and became unresponsive. He was administered Narcan with no effect and was taken to an outside hospital for treatment and was released.

The initial officer involved was treated at a hospital for deep, bleeding bites to his hand. Another officer was taken to a hospital for a knee injury.

Two members were deemed to have significant blood exposure due to the incident.

Blake was originally committed from New York City on a conviction for felony attempted criminal possession of a controlled substance.
