WEST POINT – If you are not a Department of Defense employee, you can no longer just drive into West Point. Effective Monday, July 22, all others – including those going to concerts, the hospital, or to just visit cadets – must first go to the Visitor Control Center, in the Visitors Center, just outside the main gate, for credentials if they are not attending what is considered a special event.

The new policy brings the academy into compliance with the Department of the Army access control requirements and provides a safe and secure community to study, work and live, military officials said.

All visitors to the installation will undergo a background check through the National Crime Information Center – Interstate Identification Index.

The superintendent has the authority to designate certain events as “special event,” which will reduce the access requirements back to driver’s licenses or other approved government-issued ID cards.

Special events currently include Fourth of July and Labor Day band concerts, graduation, home football games, ticketed sports events like hockey and lacrosse, Eisenhower Hall entertainment events and concerts.

Non-DOD visitors should download and fill out a Local Area Credential Request Form from the West Point website before going to the Visitor Control Center in Highland Falls.
