Melee at Suffern bar leads to arrests, injuries to cops

SUFFERN – A large disturbance at the Moon Bar on Lafayette Avenue in Suffern early Sunday morning led to the arrests of a father and his two sons and injuries to two village police officers who attempted to break up the fight. During that struggle, Officers Billy Simurra and Nick Careswell were attacked and choked and one man tried to grab an officer’s gun from its holster.

The officers activated their emergency alert button with police from Ramapo, Mahwah and the Rockland County Sheriff’s Patrol responding but not before the two local officers deployed Tasers and fought off several perpetrators.

The father and sons were transported to Good Samaritan Hospital for treatment of injuries and the two Suffern officers were treated and released for minor injuries.

Arrested were:

  • Jose Juan Sanchez-Fernandez, 46, of North Carolina, charged with assault, attempted robbery, attempted criminal possession of a weapon, criminal obstruction of breaking, resisting arrest, and obstructing governmental administration. He was sent to the Rockland County Jail in lieu of $20,000 bail.
  • Jose Juan Sanchez-Barradas, 21, of North Carolina, was charged with assault, attempted robbery, attempted criminal possession of a weapon, criminal obstruction of breathing, resisting arrest and obstructing governmental administration. Bail set at $20,000.
  • Brandon Misael Sanchez-Barradas, 25, of Dover, New Jersey, was charged with disorderly conduct resisting arrest and obstructing governmental administration, Bail set at $2,500.
  • Oscar Jacome, 22, of Suffern, was charged with disorderly conduct and released on bail.

The investigation is continuing.
