ALBANY – Orange County District Attorney David Hoovler has been elected as president of the District Attorneys Association of New York.

Hoovler, who has been chief prosecutor in his county since 2014, has three priorities to address during his tenure as head of the statewide organization and they all deal with the criminal justice reforms adopted by the legislature this year.

From a DA’s standpoint, victims come first and he wants to promote policies and practices that put the interests of victims ahead of the defendants.

Hoovler will also advocate for funding for law enforcement and DAs to implement the criminal justice reforms since no funding was provided by Albany. No resources were provided for pre-trial services agencies and offender rehabilitation and he will lobby for that as well.

“I believe the package as it was passed recklessly without any input from police chiefs, district attorneys, sheriffs or law enforcement in general and I believe it was passed by a large contingent of individuals from New York City that lack the comprehension of how the systems works around the state, and that creates a lot of problems.”

Hoovler replaces Albany County DA David Soares, who completed his term as president of the association. Monroe County DA Sandra Doorley was also sworn in as president-elect of the association.
