ALBANY – Residents who attend or are interested in attending New York State colleges on a full-time basis that are reminded the time to apply for free tuition is August 15th for the upcoming school year.

The Excelsior Scholarship program is open to those attending both community colleges and four-year schools.

“As the cost of higher education continues to rise, the Excelsior Scholarship offers much-needed assistance to New Yorkers working towards a college degree,” Assemblyman Jonathan Jacobson (D, Newburgh) said.

Excelsior Scholarship recipients may receive up to $5,500 to attend a SUNY or CUNY college. Applicants must be a resident of New York State and have resided in the state for 12 continuous months.

Applicants must be pursuing an undergraduate degree at a SUNY or CUNY college, including community colleges and the statutory colleges at Cornell University and Alfred University; be enrolled in at least 12 credits per term and complete at least 30 credits each year. Family income of applicants cannot exceed $125,000.

The award amount is determined by subtracting the amount of an applicant’s other financial aid awards, including a New York State Tuition Assistance Program (TAP) award and/or federal Pell grant, from the resident tuition rate charged by the relevant SUNY or CUNY school.

The Excelsior Scholarship will cover any remaining tuition liability up to $5,500 and a tuition credit will cover any remaining tuition expenses.
