TOWN OF NEWBURGH – In one of his last acts before he retired last year, former Senator William Larkin passed legislation to name a portion of New York Route 300 in the Town of Newburgh as Gold Star Families Memorial Highway.

Gold Star Mothers and several veterans and public officials gathered at the site of a marker that was dedicated on Monday.

Larkin’s former chief of staff, Brian Mahar, who is now executive director of the non-profit Purple Heart Hall of Honor, Inc., said the roadway designation honors all Gold Start families who have lost loved ones while serving in the military.

“While we had six families represented, they certainly represented the millions all over the country,” he said.

The sign was dedicated at the corner of Route 52 and Route 300 on the Dairy Queen property.
