CARMEL – Carmel Town Justice Joseph Spofford, Jr. will seek the post of Putnam County Court judge this fall. He will run on the Republican and Conservative lines.

The vacancy was created by the recent untimely death of Judge James Retiz.

Spofford has 30 years of judicial experience on the criminal and civil side of the law.

“During his many years as a town justice in the Town of Carmel, Joe has demonstrated every characteristic one would want to see in a judge: fairness and compassion in all matters, firmness and resolve when required and the sober and thoughtful administration of justice for all,” said former county legislator and former deputy county executive Daniel Birmingham.

County Clerk Michael Bartolotti said Spofford’s “experience, fairness and compassion make him an excellent choice for Putnam County Court judge.”

Spofford will formally make his formal campaign announcement on Wednesday.
