Man drowns in Newburgh’s Downing Park pond

NEWBURGH – A man drowned in the Downing Park pond in the City of Newburgh late Friday morning.

City Police received a call of a man face down in the pond near the area of Third Street and Robinson Avenue.

Police and city firefighters brought Santos Alirio Mendez-Perez, 22, to the shoreline where he was later pronounced dead by the medical examiner’s office.

Police said there were no obvious signs of foul play; however, the incident is being investigated by the detective division pending results of an autopsy.
