NEWBURGH – If you are driving in the City of Newburgh, you had better check your speedometer. The police department has established a traffic safety and enforcement unit within its patrol division.

The cops in that unit will focus on strict enforcement of vehicle and traffic laws and city ordinances related to traffic safety.

Creation of the unit is in direct response to the 1,219 accidents reported from July 1, 2018 through April 30, 2019, the numerous complaints from residents and the three most recent fatal accidents.

Anyone driving in the City of Newburgh should reduce their speed, adhere to all traffic laws and yield to any pedestrian or bicyclist sharing or attempting to cross the roadway, police advised.

Officers will be taking a zero tolerance approach toward any form of aggressive driving and those observed driving in a manner that would jeopardize public safety will be issued tickets, the department said.

The warning extended to anyone found driving a vehicle without the driver or vehicle being properly licensed and insured can expect to have their vehicles impounded.
