POUGHKEEPSIE – The six-week summer vacation has begun for the Poughkeepsie Common Council, but not all members will be in the pool or at the beach.

Council Chairwoman Ann Finney said she will be working on several issues before the council meets again in late August.

Housing tops the list.

Nailing down the opportunities in the rent control legislation for the City of Poughkeepsie; spoiler alert, I don’t think there are many,” Finney said.  “I’ve started talking to a few about the possibility of an ‘aging in place’ initiative to make sure that those residents who need some help to stay in their homes are able to access the services that are available and to identify those additional services that the city would provide.”

Also on Finney’s August agenda, unresolved issues with Pelton Manor and Wheaton Park.

Councilperson Sarah Salem had another issue that is bothering a lot of people.

“This towing issue; It’s just got to end,” Salem said.  “We need some information about how we can structure fees that are reasonable for people within the City of Poughkeepsie.  I, myself, have been towed and had to pay a lot of money to get my car.”

One towing company operator, speaking during public comment, said limiting his fee to $85 under a proposed ordinance that also stipulates several other requirements, including insurance, would be an insurmountable hardship.  He said he should be getting the $150 that the city is paying now for non-voluntary tows.

Some council members suggested checking with other municipalities to see what they are doing.
