Drone's eye view of boat in storm's way

New technology was able to warn people in a rowboat on Lake Superior in the Town of Bethel of an incoming violent thunderstorm on Saturday.

The topography of Lake Superior is such that one cannot easily walk or drive around the shoreline without encountering thick brush and forest. Responding deputies deployed a drone and quickly spotted the overdue boaters.  The drone was equipped with a speaker which warned the occupants of the approaching storm.

The patrons returned without incident.

“New technology continues to enhance the abilities of law enforcement, especially in the rural areas of Sullivan County,” said Sheriff Mike Schiff.

Deputies were assisted at the scene by the Town of Bethel Constables.
