City of Newburgh has highest unemployment in region

ALBANY – The City of Newburgh’s unemployment rate in May was 4.9 percent, the highest in the Hudson Valley, according to the latest statistics from the state labor department.

Region-wide the rate of joblessness was 3.3 percent.

The City of Mount Vernon had the second highest rate of unemployment, at 4.7 percent.

The City of Middletown recorded 4.3 percent joblessness while the City of Poughkeepsie was close behind at 4.1 percent joblessness.

Yonkers followed with 4.0 percent unemployment while the Town of Haverstraw came in with 3.9 percent.

New Rochelle had 3.5 percent unemployment while the Town of Carmel, Town of Yorktown and Sullivan County as a whole recorded 3.4 percent rates of joblessness.

The Village of Port Chester recorded the lowest rate in May at 2.5 percent. At 2.7 percent, the Town of Rye follows with the towns of Ossining and Monroe and the Village of Spring Valley all recording 2.9 percent unemployment.
