"The haircut" may be the best-known tradition of R-Day

WEST POINT – Today is R-Day at West Point – Reception Day – the day the incoming class of cadets begins their military life.

More than 1,900 candidates are receiving their first military clothing, haircuts and first lessons in marching and proper military etiquette.

Members of the Class of 2023 receive instructions from upper class members

The incoming class was selected for over 12,000 applicants and includes 16 international students, 285 women, 400 minorities – 180 African-Americans, 145 Hispanic Americans, 99 Asian-Americans and 19 Native Americans – and 17 combat veterans who will be immersed into basic military competencies and leader development training that will prepare them for acceptance into the Corps of Cadets.
