FISHKILL – Six baby turkeys were saved by a concerned Fishkill resident and members of the Chelsea Fire Department Sunday evening.

Michael Archer and his daughter were on the way home from a gathering when he saw a mother turkey and her young chicks walking near a curb. The young turkeys fell off the curb and into the street. Five of them proceeded to fall into a storm drain. Archer picked up the lone remaining one and returned it to the mother.

Another passerby notified the Fishkill Police who responded and then summoned the Chelsea Fire Department for assistance near 17 Sunflower Circle. Chelsea showed up with two rigs and seven firefighters and quickly opened the storm drains to receive the young birds.

As the firefighters were working, the mother bird and one chick kept a close eye from the nearby tree line.

The five young birds were safely retrieved and returned to the mother.
