WASHINGTON – The US Nuclear Regulatory Commission will be holding a public meeting in Westchester County in the coming months about the decommissioning of the Indian Point nuclear power plant.

U S Senator Kirsten Gillibrand said the session, to be held some time between August and October, will advise the public on efforts by community advisory panels to inform best practices and lessons learned associated with the decommissioning plant activity, ensuring that local voices are heard by the NRC.

“New Yorkers deserve full transparency and input as Indian Point begins the process of shutting down, which is why I pushed for a public meeting,” the senator said. “Indian Point’s close proximity to heavily populated cities, including New York City, raises unique considerations that must be carefully addressed, and I’m glad the Nuclear Regulatory Commission has taken the important step of holding a public meeting in Westchester before the process begins.”

The two Indian Point reactors are scheduled to be decommissioned beginning next year and in to 2021.
