GOSHEN – A Town of Wallkill man pled guilty before Orange County Court Judge William DeProspo on Tuesday to a felony of leaving the scene of an incident without reporting.

The plea came in connection with the death of a woman who was walking along State Street in Mount Hope when she was hit by a pickup truck at about 11:15 p.m. on March 30.

Stephen Grundel, 38, admitted that he knew his truck had struck a woman, later identified as Kiera Babcock, 34, that he had reason to believe he had injured her, but kept driving away without stopping to check on her condition or notifying the police.

Babcock was pronounced dead at the scene after being discovered by passing motorists the next morning.

Grundel faces one to three years in state prison when sentenced in August.

District Attorney David Hoovler credited State Police, Mount Hope Town Police and the State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit with investigating and analyzing the crime scene.
