POUGHKEEPSIE – Vassar Brothers Medical Center has achieved three-star overall quality ratings — the highest possible ranking — in four of five cardiac surgical categories analyzed by the Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS).

Vassar Brothers earned the high-performance ratings for its patient care and outcomes in procedures to improve blood flow to the heart and body. They include isolated coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG), aortic valve replacement (AVR), AVR combined with CABG, and mitral valve repair and replacement.

“The cardiac team at Vassar Brothers, including our specialized nurses, techs and support staff, as well as our award-winning cardiology physicians, are extremely proud of this accomplishment,” said Dr. Daniel O’Dea, vice president of cardiovascular services for Health Quest. “To attain such exemplary outcomes is truly a team effort.”

The STS star rating system is one of the most sophisticated and highly regarded overall measures of quality in healthcare, rating the benchmarked outcomes of 980 cardiothoracic surgery programs across the United States and Canada. The star rating is calculated using a combination of quality measures for specific procedures performed by an STS Adult Cardiac Surgery Database participant.

The latest analysis of data reflects all isolated CABG procedures performed in 2018 and the other categories cover a three-year period from 2016-2018. Historically, only 4 to 8 percent of participants receive the three-star rating for any single category.

“My partners and I are both grateful and proud of the dedicated group that made these amazing results possible,” said Dr. Jason Sperling, chief of cardiovascular surgery for Health Quest. “From the cardiologists and internists who send us appropriate patients to care for, to our office staff who work diligently behind the scenes, and especially to our expert clinical team of operating room staff, cardiac surgery physician assistants and nurses, we celebrate these honors together as a cohesive team.”
