NEWBURGH – The state legislature has approved a home rule measure from the Town of Newburgh allowing the municipality to charge a hotel and motel room tax to help alleviate the tax burden on residents.

The tax will be levied on any facility that provides rental units for overnight lodging including hotels, motels, bed and breakfasts and Air BnBs.

Deputy Town Supervisor and Councilman Scott Manley said the tax is good news for local residents.

“This tax will help our local taxpayers with the additional revenues being generated overwhelming by visitors to the area,” Manley said.

Orange County and a number of other local governments in the county also charge room tax.

The measure was carried in the State Senate by James Skoufis (D, Woodbury) and in the Assembly by Jonathan Jacobson (D, Newburgh).

It goes to the governor’s desk for his consideration.
