NEW CITY – Clarkstown Police Department responded to a home in New City to find out that the 77-year-old homeowner had been bitten by either her cat or a fox.

She apparently had heard noises on her back deck in the early morning. As she opened the door to the back deck to allow her cat to come into the home, a fox chased after the cat into the house. She tried separate the cat from the fox and was able to corral the fox into a spare room.

The woman was bitten but not sure whether by the fox, cat or both. She took herself to the hospital with lacerations.

The homeowner’s son released the fox from the home.  Because the fox was released, it could not be tested for rabies.

The woman received rabies shots.  That was confirmed by the Rockland County Health Department.

Health officials caution all residents to be cautious when letting pets in or out of their homes. This includes homes with animal doors.
