MID-HUDSON – This morning’s heavy rains made for even more solemn ceremonies as funeral services were held for two area notable residents who died days apart.

Putnam County Court Judge James Reitz, 57, suffered a massive heart attack while on the bench in Carmel last Friday and was pronounced dead at the hospital.

He was a well-loved and respected member of the community.

A well-attended funeral service was held at St. James Church in Carmel with burial following at Raymond Hill Cemetery.

Timothy McCormack, a Dutchess County native, was killed when the helicopter he was piloting, crashed into the roof of a building in Manhattan on Monday, June 10. He has been called a hero for avoiding a landing into crowds on the busy streets below.

McCormack was a very active member of the firematic community in Dutchess County for many years.

Following funeral services for the 58-year-old at St. Mary’s Church in Poughkeepsie, burial was in St. Peter’s Cemetery in Poughkeepsie.
