YONKERS – A Yonkers man is charged with dog abandonment and not providing adequate food, water and veterinary case for an extended time for his young pit bull, now named Stone.
On May 22, a good Samaritan discovered the emaciated dog inside a room at 73 Hamilton Avenue in Yonkers. The SPCA of Westchester’s Humane Law Enforcement Unit was alerted and responded finding the young dog in an advanced state of emaciation, dehydration and extreme neglect.
He was rushed to a local veterinarian for immediate medical attention and then brought to the SPCA’s Simpson’s Clinic the following day.
Eric Anderson, 26, was arrested by the Humane Law Enforcement Unit and charged with animal cruelty.
Authorities found that after a thorough examination, the dog’s condition was consistent with starvation. His skull, ribs, hip and pelvic bones were visibly prominent. He was denied food and water resulting in the loss of 50 percent of his body weight. If left in that state, his condition would have worsened and most likely had been fatal, SPCA officials said.
“It’s hard to understand how anyone could do something so cruel to an innocent animal,” said Shannon Laukhuf, the SPCA’s executive director. “It’s remarkable how trusting and resilient Stone is after all he endured.” She said the puppy now has “a bright future ahead” following the care by the SPCA.
