GOSHEN – Samuel Del Cid Hernandez of Monroe was sentenced by Orange County Court Judge Craig Stephen to 24 years in state prison and five years of post-release supervision in connection with the October 2018 stabbing death of Louis Rivera, 25, of Monroe in a hallway outside Hernandez’s apartment.

He pled guilty to manslaughter in April.

Prosecutors had argued that on the evening of October 12 into October 13, 2018, Hernandez and several other people, including Rivera, were drinking in Hernandez’s apartment. At some point in the evening, words were exchanged and a physical altercation occurred between Rivera and a third partygoer. Rivera then went into the hallway, Hernandez took a knife from the kitchen and follow him into the hallway where he stabbed him several times, killing him.

Hernandez is alleged to have later discarded the knife.

Monroe Village Police and State Police investigated and made the arrest.

“Weapons and alcohol are never a good combination,” said District Attorney David Hoovler. “While no sentence can compensate for the loss of a loved one, I hope this sentence will bring some measure of closure to the victim’s family.”
