Daylight car burglaries near the town park

CARMEL – Putnam Valley Supervisor Sam Oliverio is outraged by a series of vehicle break-ins that occurred last Wednesday afternoon in broad daylight less than 20 yards from where children were playing baseball and practicing soccer at the Putnam Valley Town Park.

The sheriff’s office is investigating the criminal mischief.

Oliverio said thieves used a “window glass breaker that silently shatters the glass. The device cracks the window pane making it easy for perpetrators to push the window shards onto the driver’s or passenger’s seat. Once the glass is broken, the crooks reach in and grab whatever they want.”

Oliverio estimated more than $6,000 worth of cash and personal items including laptops, purses, smart phones and pocketbooks were stolen.

He suggested that residents remove all valuables from their vehicles before parking or “at least don’t leave them in clear view. Our residents are understandably upset. They brought their children for wholesome outdoor recreation and wound up becoming victims of brazen thieves.”

Oliverio reminded the public to always be vigilant.

Anyone with information regarding the incident is asked to contact the sheriff’s office at 845-225-4300.
