ALBANY – The State Senate has taken a step to prevent future PFOA and PFAS chemical migrations into drinking water supplies by banning the future use of the chemicals in firefighting foam.

It was that foam from the Stewart Air National Guard Base that seeped into Silver Stream and into Washington Lake, the City of Newburgh’s reservoir.

Senator James Skoufis (D, Woodbury), a cosponsor of the ban legislation, said it is long overdue.

“Places like Newburgh, no community should have to suffer the consequences of these types of spills from the PFOA-laced foams,” he said.

The bill heads to the Assembly for action and if approved, goes to the governor for his signature.
