NEWBURGH – A reward of $1,000 is being offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the persons responsible for torturing and killing a cat in Newburgh and videotaping the crime. The video was circulated among Newburgh middle school students on Wednesday, May 15.

The charges for such crimes are felony animal cruelty, as well as misdemeanor animal cruelty.

The Kingston-based New York State Humane Association, which has put up the reward, is asking anyone with information about the crime to contact Newburgh City Police Detective Jessica Brooks in confidence at 845-569-7513 and if anyone has the video, they are asked to email it to Det. Brooks at JBrooks@cityofnewburgh-ny.gov as soon as possible.

The animal rights group said there is a strong correlation between animal abuse and human violence and animal abuse is considered a predictor of future human violence.
