NEWBURGH – City Police in Newburgh and officials of the Newburgh Enlarged City School District continue to investigate the torture of cats.

The brutality involved three cats with at least one killed.

A video showing animal cruelty was circulated among students at South Middle School on Wednesday and that prompted Principal Dr. Lisa Buon to contact the police.

Police Det. Sgt. Joseph Rutigliano said the videos of the incidents are very disturbing. In one video, a youth is said to have swung a cat around by rope around its neck and then smashed the animal into a wall, killing it.

“At this time we believe there were three cats that have been, at the very least, severely injured if not killed,” Rutigliano said.  “We are in the early stages of investigating that incident and we’re still interviewing people that may have knowledge of these incidents or have seen the videos that the students allegedly had taken of the incident.” Police ask anyone who has information to contact the detective bureau at 845-569-7509.
