POUGHKEEPSIE – A Poughkeepsie High School student was arrested Tuesday morning after he allegedly tried to enter the school with a gun in his backpack.

Quentin Wiggins, 19, of the City of Poughkeepsie, was charged with criminal possession of a weapon and an additional crime of criminal possession of a weapon on school grounds, both as felonies. Wiggins was taken into police custody and transported to the detective division for further investigation.

Police Captain Richard Wilson was on the scene investigating.

“Security at the Poughkeepsie High School came to be aware that a person trying to enter the school had a weapon in a backpack,” Wilson said. “That weapon and backpack were secured along with the person who brought that into the school.” Many students were already in the school which was immediately placed on lockdown.  Wilson said that several officers and a Dutchess County Sheriff’s deputy responded to the school to search and secure the building. The lockdown was lifted and students were allowed to enter the building as of approximately 8:40 a.m.
