KINGSTON – With CSX railroad tracks running through the City of Kingston, authorities are heightening awareness for pedestrian safety.

Dozens of high school students cross the tracks for shortcuts to and from school, but city police emphasize the only safe place to cross the tracks is at a designed street crossing or the Broadway underpass.

Since Kingston High School is near the tracks, efforts are being made to promote the safety initiative.

In the Greenkill Avenue area recently, some 25 to 30 students who took the shortcut home were given informational flyers that provide safety tips as well as a warning of the legal ramifications for walking on or across railroad property.

Kingston Police are working to promote the safety message with CSX Railroad, the US Department of Transportation’s Federal Railroad Administration, State Department of Transportation, Ulster County Transportation Planning Department and Kingston Public Safety Office.
