BEACON – Legendary folksinger Pete Seeger of Beacon died in January 2014 at age 94. May 3 was the 100th anniversary of his birth and the environmental organization Clearwater celebrated the date over the weekend.

It was Seeger whose visit saw construction of the Clearwater, which sailed in May 1969.

Clearwater organization Executive Director Greg Williams remembers Seeger’s environmental accomplishments.

“The Clearwater actually sailed to Washington D.C. with an enormous number of petition signatures to help with the passage of the Clean Water Act, which is absolutely the foundation of how we protect our waterways and our drinking water,” Williams noted. He also said Seeger and Clearwater had had significant input that saw creation of the Superfund law, under which GE was held to account for the PCBs it dumped into the Hudson River and have been cleaning up.
