ALBANY – The number of people who are unemployed in the Hudson Valley continued to decline in March when compared to the same month last year, the state labor department reported Tuesday.

The rate of joblessness one year ago was at 4.2 percent as compared to 3.6 percent this March.

Labor department analyst John Nelson said the continued drop in unemployment is a good sign for the economy.

“This low unemployment rate is continuing by the fact that our civilian labor force is continuing at the same time,” he said.

New jobs rose by 1.2 percent.

In March, Rockland and Dutchess counties had the lowest rate of joblessness in the region at 3.5 percent. That was followed by 3.6 percent in Columbia, Putnam and Westchester counties.

Orange County had a rate of 3.7 percent while Ulster County came in at 3.8 percent joblessness. Unemployment in Sullivan County was 4.2 percent and in Greene County, it was 4.5 percent.
