OSSINING – Environmental group American Rivers named the Hudson River among America’s Most Endangered Rivers® of 2019. The Hudson received the No. 2 spot on the list of 10.

The report cites what it calls “the grave threat that potential construction of storm surge barriers could pose to this rich tidal estuary.”

The report faults the plans being considered by U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, calling them “far too limited.”  Among the plans are “walls could act like partial dams, blocking fish and wildlife, including Atlantic and shortnose sturgeon, American shad, American eel …” according to the American Rivers report.

Riverkeeper issued a statement in response to the report, calling on the Corps “… to consider alternative solutions that address broader climate-related challenges – both storm surge and sea level rise flooding – without harming the river.”

Number one on the list is the Gila River in New Mexico.  Number three is the Upper Mississippi River.
