NEW CITY – A Rockland County doctor faces up to one year in the county jail following his jury conviction of sexual abuse as a misdemeanor.
Dr. Hiten Lakhani, 50, an ophthalmologist with offices in Bardonia, was found guilty of engaging in sexual contact with a child under the age of 14 in August 2012. The victim was known to him.
“As a doctor, the defendant was keenly aware of how harmful his actions would be to his young victim,” said District Attorney Thomas Zugibe. “This sexual predator now has the possibility of going to jail as a result of his depraved behavior.”
Based on his conviction, Lakhani will be required to register as a sex offender.
