Unhappy cub will spend the winter in a happier place

TOWN OF ROCHESTER – A 20-pound black bear cub that fell some 20 feet from a tree in the Town of Rochester the other day will get to spend the winter with a rehabilitator.
The cub was spotted by a bow hunter when it fell from the tree. He called the state Encon officers who found the animal alert but dazed from the fall. They contacted the DEC regional bear biologist, who advised the officers to capture it and bring it to a wildlife rehabilitator.
With assistance from a nearby landowner and the original caller, the officers delivered the cub to a kennel.
The caller’s children picked an apple from a nearby tree and asked the officers to give it to the cub for the ride to the rehabilitator.
The animal will spend the winter there where it will be assessed and treated for any injuries.
